Guinea-Bissau coup: Confusion over UN resolution and ECOWAS deal

The United Nations Security Council has issued a resolution condemning the military coup in Guinea-Bissau and demanding a return to the election process which was taking place. But the Economic Community of West African States has negotiated a contradictory deal with the military junta. This puts one of the two main players in the presidential election in power.

THE LANGUAGE and substance of the United Nations Security Council on Guinea-Bissau could not be more clear and definitive. It condemned the leaders of the military coup and insisted that presidential elections be allowed to continue.
